While serving in Vietnam as the Company Commander of A Company, First Shore Party Battalion in 1969, First Lieutenant Smathers was decorated with the Navy Commendation Medal with “V” for his “meritorious service” and actions under fire. He was given a field promotion to the rank of Captain. After the war was over, he spent three more years in the reserves and then resigned his commission as a Major for a role in the private world.

Mr. Smathers served on the Board of Directors for Waterman Hospital for over six years.  He was Lake County Coordinator for the Leukemia Society and served as master of ceremonies for two years. He founded the Mount Dora Art Festival and served as Chairman for three years. He has worked with the March of Dimes in preventing child birth defects.

While at Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley), Mr. Smathers received the National Sales Directors Award for finishing number one in his class; was voted Account Executive of the year in 1993; and was on the Presidents Club for six consecutive years. As a Financial Advisor and branch insurance coordinator with that firm, he taught numerous brokers and trainees. He attended the Dean Witter Graduate School where he attained the title of Retirement Planning Consultant  in 1994. A year later, he received the title of Certified Estate Specialist after attending the very arduous American College Graduate Program offered through the Wharton School of Business in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

In 2001, Mr. Smathers left the merged companies of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter to become an Investment Advisor Representative with SunAmerica Securities, Inc.  In 2003, he passed the Series 24 Principal examination. That allowed him to set up Smathers Financial Group, Inc., as a fee-based, estate and financial planning company, which is currently registered with the State of Florida as an Independent Registered Investment Advisor.  In 2009, he passed the Series 4 Option Principal Exam. He also has the Series 7, 24, 31, 62, 63 and 66 licenses as well as the Florida Life and Annuities license.

SunAmerica Securities, Inc., along with five other broker dealer firms, were acquired by AIG Insurance Company to form a new broker dealer firm called AIG Advisor Group.  Mr. Smathers was elected to the President Club of AIG Advisors Group for 2002 and 2003.

Today, in addition to offering Financial and Estate Planning through Smathers Financial Group, Inc., Mr. Smathers is an Investment Advisor Representative with NEXT Financial Group, Inc. located in Houston, Texas.
